The Bilbao International Singing Competition was first held in 1984, driven by the great love of choral music and opera among the population of Bizkaia and the Basque Country in general.
In 1985, the competition joined the World Federation of International Musical Competitions, a UNESCO organisation, which provided it with resulted significant endorsement and international showcasing. Right from the start, hundreds of aspiring singers have taken part in the Bilbao competition and some of them today are members of the casts of major international theatres, including Ana María Sánchez, Isabel Rey, Micaela Carosi and Francisco Casanova.
The involvement of an international jury has been one of the basic pillars underpinning the recognised world prestige of the Bilbao International Singing Competition.
In 2012, the competition has changed its name and will henceforth be known as the "PEDRO Mª UNANUE" BILBAO-BIZKAIA INTERNATIONAL SINGING COMPETITION. The qualifying rounds will be starting on 26 November and the grand final will be held on 1 December

Beethoven y el Doctor Atomic

John Adams revitalizó la ópera, devolviendo a la escena las noticias que habían sido historia reciente en las portadas de los periódicos. Doctor Atomic recrea el clima de tensión que rodeó a los primeros ensayos de la bomba atómica, y se adelantó a la hora de elevar a Oppenheimer a la altura de héroe trágico. Su música tuvo tal potencia que Adams creó una sinfonía sobre ella, a la que sucede en el programa el luminoso concierto de violín de Beethoven, una música sanadora en las manos del estupendo Khachatryan.
