The plot is very modern and innovative for its time, in which the figure of the woman stands out in terms of her character and determination, in spite of the reigning customers and morality. The libretto, by L. Fernández de Sevilla and L. Tejedor, tells of the life and loves of Reyes, a single mother who is being courted by José María, even though she is still in love with Fernando, the sailor who fathered her child.
